Monument Valley (Utah) U.S.A.
Before about 70 million years ago the land was covered by the foothills of the waters of the todays Gulf of Mexico. As the country gradually lifted and displaced the water, it left a vast plain, whose fault fissures and cracks of erosion were exposed to wind and rain . The softer sandstone layers were removed in the course of millions of years. Today's "Monuments" are the survivors of the erosion forces, the harder rock layers. The foundations of the rocks are made of the soft red-brown organ rock shale (shale, about 230 million years old), it is 215 million years old De Chelly - sandstone. Its content of hematite is however in the Monument Valley, higher than in the rest of the Colorado Plateau, and thus the red color more intense. The tip is the harder Shinarump lineup (about 195 million years old). Since 1960, the area of about 120 square kilometers is as a Navajo Tribal Park under nature protection, but open to the public. It is not a national park, but is solely in the responsibility of the Navajo Indians.
